| Description | Regina Music Box Stand and Disc Cabinet, 1896. Wooden cabinet sits on four serpentine legs. There is a pull-out shelf on right side. Front cabinet door has a laminated beaded design forming a square with floral motif in corners. Beveled edging beneath cabinet has a carved tulip motif that matches the music box (1966.119.1). Cabinet door has a brass locking mechanism. Inside top and bottom of cabinet is lined with unfinished wood notched out to hold 14 vertical dividers. Six such wooden dividers are present and each has a circular recess at front center with scrolled edging on either side. |

| Notes | 'First mass-produced in the mid-1880s, the disc-music box offered a significant advantage over the earlier cylinder type in that it used interchangeable discs, which allowed the music to be easily switched. Advanced models could even change discs automatically. 'One of the largest American manufacturers of disc-music boxes, the Regina Music Box Company, was established in 1892 by the German manufacturer Polyphon to circumvent the high tariffs on goods imported into the United States. 'Disc-music boxes had their greatest popularity from the mid-1890s to the early 1900s. By around 1910, competition from the phonograph had driven most of the disc-music box manufacturers out of business or forced them to turn to other manufacturing.
